I am on a little netbook so the pics are small on my screen but from what I can see I like it very much. I like that the front has a nice, clear photo of a rhino and the back has a more of a drawing. The black background works well with both the photo and drawing.
I would improve the fonts and text. Specifically, I think the front cover would be better served by identifying this as an anthology of poetry. A subtitle perhaps of “a global poetry anthology”. This subtitle will also help with cataloguing and google searches. And below that subtitle I would say “edited by Harry Owen”. Lose the word “compiled” – it sounds unprofessional in this situation. Reports are compiled. Poetry anthologies are edited.
On the back cover I would definitely lose the cursive font and go to something very simple and straightforward – Arial or maybe Times Roman or Garamond. Less is more where fonts are concerned. Fancy frilly fonts are hard to read and look unprofessional.
Just my 2 cents, since you asked. Very pleased to be included in this important book! Thanks for all your hard work and your vision, Harry. 🙂
Many thanks, Kim, for your comments. The cursive text has already gone – I could never abide that! – and there is a separate addition to the front cover: “An international anthology”. I thought about the including the word ‘poetry’ but, on balance, decided against it, largely because I know too many people who might be irrationally put off by it. I think the cover will invite potential purchasers to pick it up and look inside, where they will quickly see that it is poetry without running the risk that they won’t pick it up at all! As for the ‘Compiled and’, I take your point and will seek to have the phrase removed. Thanks again – and stay in touch! Harry
Yes, I see your point about including the word “poetry” on the cover and the possible “turn-off” factor for some buyers. The book is going to be fantastic!
